Is white onyx the best onyx for a backlit bathroom surface?
Last updated November 2026.
Quick answer
- Material
- Banded calcite (travertine type), Mohs about 3
- Look
- Ice-white ground; veining gold, gray and occasionally red
- Light
- Described as the most evenly translucent onyx
- Classic localities
- Northwest Iran near Tabriz and Lake Urmia; Turkey also named
- Weak points
- Natural cracks and fissures in every slab; etches in acid; shows marks
White onyx is usually the best choice when an even glow matters. It is ice-white banded calcite with gold or gray veining, and suppliers describe it as the most uniformly translucent onyx because it has the fewest opaque inclusions. It is soft, about Mohs 3, so it suits feature walls and basins better than floors.

Is white onyx the best onyx for a backlit bathroom surface?
For an even, diffuse glow, usually yes. In2stone says white onyx is typically the most uniformly translucent variety because its lighter composition has fewer opaque mineral inclusions, so the whole surface lights evenly instead of in zones. Green and blue onyx glow with more contrast and color.
Under ordinary light it reads as an understated white stone with soft cloudy depth. Switched on from behind, it becomes a luminous panel. That swing between two looks is the reason to specify it. For properties shared by every onyx color, see the general onyx guide; for lighting hardware, see backlit onyx.
What are the properties of White Onyx?
| Property | White Onyx |
|---|---|
| Rock type | Compact banded travertine of very fine-grained calcite [1] |
| Mohs hardness | 3 for calcite; silica onyx is 6.5–7 [4] |
| Ground and veining | Ice white; gold, gray, occasionally red veins [1] |
| Translucency | Typically the most uniformly translucent onyx [2] |
| Cause of whiteness | Little oxidation and few impurities [1] |
| Localities named | Northwest Iran (Tabriz to Lake Urmia); Turkey and Iran [1] |
| Backlight spec (seller) | Warm white LED at 2700–3000K, dimmable, even spacing [2] |
| Resealing (seller) | About every six months [2] |
| Slabs | Natural cracks and fissures present in all onyx [1] |

What makes white onyx white, and where is it found?
Prestige Edition says the purity comes from the stone having endured little oxidation, which groundwater normally causes, and carrying few impurities. It describes onyx geologically as a compact banded travertine of very fine-grained calcite, the same family as the travertine on our travertine page.
General geology: the same distributor places much white onyx in northwest Iran, in a region of thermal springs between Tabriz and Lake Urmia that left large travertine and onyx deposits. In2stone names Turkey and Iran. These are seller statements about the variety, not a quarry survey.
What does white onyx look like, and how much does it vary?
The ground is ice white to snow white. Veining can be gold, gray and occasionally red, per Prestige Edition. In2stone describes a milky translucency with only the faintest golden amber veining, and contrasts it with ivory onyx, which carries warmer honey banding and a creamier base.
Every onyx slab has natural cracks and fissures, Prestige Edition notes, and that is a characteristic of the material, not a defect to be rejected. Vein-cut and cross-cut give different patterns in most onyx, but the same source says in white onyx the difference is negligible because the stone is so pure.
| Check on the slab | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Cracks and fissures | Present in all onyx; look at where they sit relative to cut-outs and edges |
| Translucent versus opaque patches | Opaque areas stay dark when lit |
| Vein color (gold, gray, red) | Sets the warm or cool tone of the lit surface |
| Thickness and backing | Thin sections glow most; backing affects strength and weight |

What light works behind white onyx?
In2stone recommends warm white LED panels at 2700–3000K for the most flattering glow, positioned far enough behind the slab for even illumination without hot spots, and dimmable so the surface can run from a soft ambient glow to full brightness. That is a supplier recommendation, not a standard.
Two practical points follow. A wall that is lit from behind needs access for service and heat to escape, so plan this with your installer. Electrics near water belong to a licensed electrician working to local code.
Can white onyx go in a shower or on a vanity?
In2stone calls a white onyx shower wall spectacular but says moisture management is critical, with waterproofing behind the slab and a sealed face. Use Natural Stone's shower guidance says acid etches marble and travertine, seal stone in daily-use bathrooms and use a pH-neutral cleaner; it does not address onyx, which is softer.
Prestige Edition advises against onyx in areas of heavy foot traffic, so floors are out. Vessel basins, vanity fronts and feature walls are the lower-risk uses, and a vanity top works with careful habits. Our weight model uses about 168 lb/ft³ for onyx; see onyx bathtubs and onyx basins.
How do you keep white onyx looking clean?
White stone shows marks, In2stone notes, so it applies an impregnating sealer at installation and recommends resealing every six months, blotting spills immediately, using pH-neutral cleaners and avoiding all acids. Use Natural Stone's general guidance on neutral cleaners and squeegeeing walls after showers applies here too.
No standard fixes an onyx sealing interval. Ask your fabricator what they use and why.
How does white onyx compare with green onyx and with white marble?
Against green or blue onyx, white trades color for evenness. Against white marble such as Carrara or Calacatta, onyx is the only one that transmits light, and also the softer and more fragile. Marble is the practical choice for a vanity top or floor; onyx is the choice for a glowing wall or a basin. Prestige Edition adds that white onyx has the most global demand of the colors, which makes it the most expensive onyx on the market, a seller's claim.
