What is Carrara marble, and how does it do in a bathroom?
Last updated November 2026.

Quick answer
- Look
- White to blue-gray with soft, subtle gray veining
- Named for
- The Carrara district in Tuscany, Italy (general geology)
- ASTM C503 compressive strength
- 7,500 psi minimum
- ASTM C503 absorption
- 0.20% by weight maximum
- Mohs hardness
- About 3 (calcite)
Carrara marble is the name for white to blue-gray marble with soft gray veining, taken from the Carrara district in Tuscany. In a bathroom it is quiet, dense and low in absorption. It etches in acid like any marble, though its soft tone makes dulling less obvious than on dark stone.
What is Carrara?
Carrara is the best-known name in white marble. It describes a stone that is white to blue-gray, with soft gray veins. Because the veins are low in contrast, the surface reads as calm and slightly cool.
In a bathroom it behaves as marble does. It is dense, takes a polish, absorbs very little water, and dulls in acids. A pale gray ground is forgiving: wear and fine etching blend into the surface sooner than they do on black or high-contrast white stone.
What are the properties of Carrara?
| Property | Carrara |
|---|---|
| Color | Typically white or blue-grey; quarries also ship marble streaked with black or grey [1] |
| Veining | Subtle gray veining on a gentle white background [3] |
| Common types | Bianco Carrara (C and CD), Bianco Venatino, Statuarietto; Bardiglio carries more black [1] |
| Compressive strength (ASTM C503 minimum) | 7,500 psi [2] |
| Modulus of rupture (ASTM C503 minimum) | 1,000 psi [2] |
| Water absorption (ASTM C503 maximum) | 0.20% by weight [2] |
| Density (ASTM C503 minimum) | 162 lb/ft³ calcite class [2] |
| Mohs hardness | Calcite is 3 [5] |
| Honed vs polished | Honed marble is very absorbent and should be sealed, while a honed surface generally needs less maintenance than a polished one [6] |

Where does the name Carrara come from?
Carrara is a city in the province of Massa and Carrara in northern Tuscany, and the quarries above it lie in the Apuan Alps. Wikipedia counts at least 650 quarry sites there, about half abandoned or exhausted. The Romans cut the stone as marmor lunense (Luna marble) and used it for the Pantheon and Trajan's Column.
The Malaspina family owned most quarries through the Middle Ages, and a regulating Office of Marble was created in 1564. That history is why the name carries so much weight, and why it is used so widely.
Does a Carrara piece come from Italy?
The name tells you a look, not a quarry. Carrara marble is classically a product of the Carrara district, but it is a trade name, and the term is applied to white and gray marble with soft veining. Pietra Fonte makes no claim that a piece is Italian or comes from a specific quarry.

What grades and looks fall under Carrara?
| Name | What Wikipedia says |
|---|---|
| Statuario | Purest white; described as now exhausted; prized for sculpture |
| Bianco Carrara | Available as C and CD; among the most common types |
| Bianco Venatino, Statuarietto | Other common types |
| Bardiglio | More black; used for facings and floors since Roman times |
| Calacatta, Arabescato | Listed as more expensive, exotic variations |

For a tub or basin, the usual choice is a Bianco Carrara look. Pale pieces with fine veining dominate; darker Bardiglio-style stone is a separate decision.
How do the ASTM numbers apply to a tub or basin?
ASTM C503 is a minimum standard for marble used in buildings. The values are floors that sound marble should clear, not predictions for a specific block.
| Measure | ASTM C503 value | What it means for a tub or basin |
|---|---|---|
| Absorption, maximum | 0.20% by weight | Very little water enters a sound block |
| Density, minimum (calcite) | 162 lb/ft³ | Heavy; plan the floor |
| Compressive strength, minimum | 7,500 psi | Ample for carrying its own weight |
| Modulus of rupture, minimum | 1,000 psi | Edges and thin sections still need care |
Source: ASTM C503, 08a edition. Our weight model uses about 168 lb/ft³ for marble.
A typical 67 × 31 × 22 in oval marble tub weighs about 1,150 lb empty. Check floor framing with a structural engineer.
How do you care for Carrara?
- Seal honed or polished surfaces with a natural stone sealer.
- Wipe after use and squeegee water from walls and rims.
- Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner; keep vinegar and citrus away.
- Plan on a re-hone of the area if etching bothers you.
See the stone bathtub care guide for the whole routine.
Choose the finish with care in mind. On a polished surface, an etch shows as a dull patch that catches the light; a honed surface is already matte, so light etching blends in and a wet tub floor is less slick. Many owners pick honed for the inside of a tub or basin and polished for the outside, where little water or soap reaches.
How does Carrara compare with Calacatta and Nero Marquina?
Houzz sums up the first pair: Carrara is grayer with softer veining, Calacatta whiter with bolder markings. If you want drama, look at Calacatta. If you want quiet, Carrara.
Nero Marquina inverts the palette with a black ground and white veins. It makes a strong statement and shows etching and water spots sooner. For the shared chemistry, see marble.
What does Pietra Fonte make in Carrara?
Pietra Fonte carves marble bathtubs, marble basins and vanities in Carrara-look marble. Each is made to order from a single block, inspected with photos or video before shipping, and quoted with exact dimensions and weight.
