What makes a marble bathtub expensive?
The stone itself (rare onyx can cost several times white marble), carving the tub from one large block, hand finishing, crated freight for a piece weighing over 1,000 lb, and installation, which may include moving a drain or reinforcing the floor.
- The stone. The same tub can cost several times more in rare onyx than in white marble; colour, veining and how much of a block is usable all count.
- Carving from one block. A tub is cut from a single block, so size and depth set how large (and costly) the block must be.
- Size, form and finish. Fluting, curved walls and honed or polished finishes add hours of hand work.
- Weight and freight. Solid stone tubs weigh about 1,100–2,500 lb, so crating, freight and white-glove delivery are real line items.
- Installation and the floor. Moving a drain or reinforcing a floor can add thousands; check with a contractor or structural engineer before ordering.
- How it's sold. Dealer and showroom brands carry list prices well above direct-from-workshop makers for the same kind of piece.
Installation and floor costs
- Freestanding tub installation, straightforward: $200–$1,000
- Full installation incl. plumbing and finishing: $800–$3,000
- Moving a drain in a concrete slab: $1,000–$3,000+
- Floor reinforcement for a heavy tub: $300–$800
- Structural reinforcement for a filled stone tub: $2,000 or more
How much does a stone bathtub weigh?
Solid stone tubs weigh roughly 1,100 to 2,000 lb empty, and about 2,500 lb or more when filled, depending on size and stone. Ask for the exact weight of your piece and have a contractor or structural engineer confirm the floor can carry it.

A worked example
A 70–72″ marble tub at a published price of about $17,000–$20,500, plus $999 crated freight, plus $800–$3,000 to install, comes to roughly $18,800–$24,500 before any floor reinforcement or drain moves (as of October 2026; figures from the sources above). If the floor needs strengthening, budget $2,000 or more on top.
