What size freestanding tub do I need?
Allow the tub's length and width plus about 6 inches around it for cleaning and the look of space, and roughly 30 inches of clear floor where you step in. A 60–66 inch tub suits most primary bathrooms; 67–72 inches lets a tall bather lie back with legs extended.
- 55–59 inches: compact; fits smaller bathrooms and suits shorter bathers.
- 60–66 inches: the most common freestanding size and the easiest to place.
- 67–72 inches and longer: room to lie back fully; needs a larger room and, in stone, a floor check.
How big is a Japanese soaking tub?
A Japanese soaking tub (ofuro) trades length for depth: usually 40 to 48 inches long and 26 to 32 inches deep, so you sit upright with water to the shoulders. It suits small rooms, but the deeper water makes it heavy for its footprint, especially in stone.
What size are stone bathtubs?
Solid stone tubs are carved from one block, so sizes are set by the block and the design. Published examples run from 66 to 78 inches long, and made-to-order makers can cut to your length. Expect them to be 1 to 3 inches wider than an acrylic tub of the same basin size, because of the thicker walls.

How much room does a freestanding tub need?
- Tub footprint plus about 6 inches on every exposed side.
- Around 30 inches of clear floor where you step in.
- Drain position: freestanding tubs drain through the floor, so confirm the location before ordering.
- Filler: floor-mounted or wall-mounted, placed so the spout reaches past the rim.
- Delivery path: every door, stair and turn must clear the crated tub.
- Local code and your contractor have the final say.
