What is backlit onyx, and can a sink or tub be backlit?
Last updated November 2026.
Quick answer
- Stone
- Banded calcite onyx, Mohs hardness 3, translucent
- Thin stone panel example
- 16 mm stone and honeycomb composite, about 19 kg/m2 (one manufacturer)
- Typical solid tub wall
- 2.5 in (about 64 mm), roughly four times that panel
- LED type
- Low-voltage LEDs; warm 2700K to 3000K deepens amber and gold veining
- Moisture rating
- IP65 or above for bathroom LED strips; driver outside wet zones
- Installation
- Licensed electrician and local electrical code
Backlit onyx is translucent calcite onyx lit from behind with LEDs, so light shows through the stone. A sink or vessel basin can be lit if the stone is thin enough or lit from the rim or base. A solid, thick-walled bathtub shows depth and color but will not glow through its walls.

What is backlit onyx?
Backlit onyx is a slab, panel or carved piece of translucent onyx with a light source behind or beside it, so light passes through the stone and shows its bands, clouds and veins. The onyx used in baths is banded calcite, rated 3 on the Mohs scale, and one supplier lists backlit wall features among its main uses.
This guide covers how it works and where it fits in a bathroom. For the stone itself, see our onyx stone page and onyx bathtubs. For the difference between onyx and marble, see the onyx vs marble guide.

Why does onyx transmit light?
Calcite is transparent to translucent as a mineral, and onyx forms as fine layers of calcite deposited from water. Light enters the face, scatters inside the stone, and exits on the other side, picking up the color of each band. Marble, built of interlocking crystals, does not pass light the same way.
Transmission varies from block to block and band to band, so a lit panel shows its structure. Warm LEDs at 2700K to 3000K deepen amber and gold veining, according to one lighting maker.
How thick can backlit onyx be?
Thinner stone passes more light, and thickness varies across a slab, so thinner areas show brighter spots. The tradeoff is strength: thin onyx is fragile, which is why panel makers reinforce it. One manufacturer's backlit onyx panels are a thin layer of stone on a polymer honeycomb core, 16 mm in total and about 19 kg per square meter, which it says cuts the weight of the stone by 80%.
We could not find independent, verified light-transmission percentages by thickness for onyx, so none are given here. Treat any figure quoted without a test as approximate, and ask for a light test on a sample from the block you will receive.
How is onyx backlit?
Three basics matter: the light source, the gap and the diffusion. Point sources such as LED strips, dots or modules show through translucent stone as bright and dark patches. One lighting maker uses low-voltage LEDs coupled to etched optical-grade acrylic that spreads the light into an even plane with no hot spots; its panel profile starts around a quarter inch thin and suits shallow setbacks.
- Choose onyx and cut thickness for the effect you want.
- Pick an edge-lit or diffused panel, or leave a cavity deep enough for strips to blend.
- Choose warm or tunable white for the stone's color.
- Locate the driver outside wet zones with access for service.
- Have a licensed electrician connect it to local code.
Is backlit onyx safe in a bathroom?
It can be, if the electrical side is specified for the room. One lighting supplier says bathroom LED strips should be IP65 or above, with the driver installed outside wet zones or in a suitably rated waterproof enclosure. IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets from any direction. Low-voltage 12V or 24V systems are considered safer than mains lighting, but the same source still advises an electrician.
Heat and moisture are the practical issues. Keep LEDs and drivers ventilated and out of splash zones, use components rated for the location, and follow the maker's instructions. For structure, plumbing and wiring, check with a structural engineer, a licensed plumber and a licensed electrician, and your local code, before ordering.
Where does backlit onyx work in a bathroom?
| Application | Fit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Vanity front or door | Good | Thin panel on a cabinet front; light source and driver sit in the cabinet |
| Wall panel behind a tub or vanity | Good | Keep the face out of direct splash |
| Vessel sink | Possible | Needs a thin wall or lighting under and around the base; confirm with a sample |
| Tub plinth or base recess | Good | Glow reflected on the floor, not through the tub walls |
| Solid carved tub, 2.5 in walls | Limited | Shows depth and color; little light through the wall |
| Countertop edge or shelf | Possible | Needs edge or underside lighting; strength and sealing considered |
Based on the thin-panel, translucency and thickness information above. Specific results depend on the stone and block; test a sample.
Can an onyx sink or bathtub be backlit?
A thin-walled vessel basin can show a glow if the stone is thin enough and the light is placed correctly; a thick basin shows warm depth instead. A solid bathtub is different. A typical 67 by 31 by 22 in oval stone tub has 2.5 in walls, about 64 mm, which is roughly four times the 16 mm panel above. Most light will not make it through that much calcite, so tub lighting is better placed in a plinth recess, beneath the rim or behind the tub.
Pietra Fonte makes solid onyx bathtubs and basins to order, and walls are specified with the buyer. If you want a lit piece, say so at the start of the bespoke brief so thickness and light placement are planned together. Browse onyx basins and onyx bathtubs.
What care does onyx need after it is installed?
Onyx is soft and sensitive. It is vulnerable to acid, ammonia and alcohol, and one supplier advises resealing every 6 to 12 months and watching for water absorption or dulling as a sign it is due. Light also shows stains more clearly, because the stone is translucent.
Wipe cosmetics and toothpaste promptly, avoid acidic cleaners, and read our stone care guide.
