What is silver travertine, and does it hold up in a bathroom?
Last updated November 2026.
Quick answer
- Material
- Travertine: freshwater limestone deposited by mineral springs
- Look
- Cool gray to silver and taupe, with visible banding
- Density (one listing)
- 2,340–2,350 kg/m³, about 146 lb/ft³
- Finishes listed
- Honed, polished, brushed, leathered, tumbled; filled or unfilled
- Main caution
- Calcium carbonate: acids etch it, and unfilled pits collect grime
Silver travertine is a gray variety of travertine, a limestone laid down by mineral springs, with cool silver, charcoal and taupe bands. It is porous by nature, so the choice of filled or unfilled, honed or brushed matters more than the color. Acids etch it, so it suits walls and floors better than a daily-use vanity top.

What is silver travertine, and does it hold up in a bathroom?
Silver travertine is a gray, banded travertine, which makes it a limestone, not a marble. Wikipedia defines travertine as a freshwater limestone deposited around mineral springs, often with a fibrous or concentric look, and says it occurs in white, tan, cream and rusty varieties. Silver is the cool, gray end of that range.
In a bathroom it behaves like other travertine: a calcium carbonate stone that etches in acid and is naturally porous. It works well on shower walls, floors and surrounds when filled and sealed, and less well as a hardworking vanity top. See the travertine overview for properties shared by all colors.
What are the properties of Silver Travertine?
| Property | Silver Travertine |
|---|---|
| Rock type | Freshwater limestone from mineral springs; calcium carbonate [1] |
| Colors | Silver, charcoal, taupe, soft beige; cool gray with visible banding [3] |
| Names used | Silver Gray, Ash, Sivas Silver; smoky or chestnut in one region [2] |
| Density (one listing) | 2,340–2,350 kg/m³ (about 146 lb/ft³) [2] |
| Finishes listed | Polished, honed, brushed, leathered, tumbled [3] |
| Filled vs unfilled | Cement or resin fill; unfilled keeps natural cavities [4] |
| Slab thickness listed | 18, 20 or 30 mm [3] |
| Acid reaction | Etches; sealing slows staining but not etching [4] |
| Calcite hardness | 3 on the Mohs scale [6] |

How does silver travertine look, and what do the names mean?
MQ Marble describes silver, charcoal, taupe and soft beige. A tile retailer, Stone Tile Depot, lists its Silver as a cool gray with visible banding, sold alongside darker mixed grays. In vein cut, FOR U Stone notes some white waves along the stone, and the color ranges from light to dark.
Trade names multiply. FOR U Stone lists Silver Gray, Ash and Sivas Silver travertine as additional names, and says silver is also called smoky or chestnut travertine in one Iranian district. Those aliases are seller labels, so compare actual slab photos instead of relying on a name.
| Cut | Pattern | Typical reaction |
|---|---|---|
| Vein cut | Long, straight horizontal bands (MQ Marble) | Striped and linear; the form listed most often for silver |
| Cross cut | More circular, blended patterning (Prestige Edition, describing onyx) | Softer and less directional |
FOR U Stone says silver can be cut either way. Check a sample, since cut terms and labels vary between sellers.
Should silver travertine be filled or unfilled in a bathroom?
Filled is usually the practical choice for wet areas. Stone Tile Depot explains that cavities are filled at the factory with matched cement or resin, or left open; filled stone gives a continuous surface that takes a honed finish cleanly, while unfilled keeps natural holes. MQ Marble offers both and says filled surfaces are smoother.
Stone Tile Depot lists filled tile for shower floors and walls. The fill type affects the result: cement fill and resin fill age differently under water and cleaners, so ask which is used and request a wet sample.
Which finish suits silver travertine: honed, polished, brushed or leathered?
| Finish | Look | Bathroom note |
|---|---|---|
| Honed | Flat, matte; most common on travertine | Shows etching less than polished; good for walls and floors |
| Polished | Glossy, deepens the gray | Etches visibly; slippery when wet on floors |
| Brushed or leathered | Textured face | Shows etching least (Stone Tile Depot, on brushed) |
| Tumbled | Rounded edges, slightly open face | Rustic; more cleaning in open pits |
Finishes per MQ Marble and Stone Tile Depot; slip comments are general guidance, not a rating. Ask for a coefficient of friction test for floors.
Stone Tile Depot says tumbled or brushed faces and warmer, more varied colors show etching least. A uniform cool gray shows etch marks readily, which argues for a honed or textured face in a shower.
Does silver travertine stain or etch?
Both. Stone Tile Depot says sealing slows staining but does not prevent etching, and that citrus, vinegar and some bathroom cleaners leave dull marks. Use Natural Stone's guidance agrees that acid etches travertine and marble, that daily-use bathroom stone should be sealed and that a neutral pH cleaner is the right choice.
MQ Marble recommends a pH-neutral stone cleaner, clean water and non-abrasive tools, and gives no fixed sealing interval, since it depends on the pore structure, filling, finish and use. A professional can rehone or repolish dulled areas.
How does silver travertine compare with beige travertine and gray marble?
Silver travertine shares the pits and linear banding of beige travertine but reads cooler and more modern. Against gray marble such as Carrara, it has less veining drama, and it is generally more porous. The travertine vs marble comparison sets out the trade-offs for tubs and basins.
Weight is similar to other travertine: one listing gives 2,340–2,350 kg/m³, about 146 lb/ft³, against the 156 lb/ft³ our weight model uses for travertine generally, so density varies by block.
Where is silver travertine classically found?
Travertine forms at hot springs worldwide. Wikipedia names Tivoli near Rome, Pamukkale in Turkey and Mahallat in Iran among its occurrences. Seller pages for silver travertine name Iran and Turkey, and one listing says Turkey in its description but Iran on its spec line, so a name is not reliable evidence of origin. This is general geology of the variety only.
