What is Arabescato marble, and what should you ask before buying it?
Last updated November 2026.

Quick answer
- Stone family
- Marble; calcite or dolomite
- Named varieties
- Arabescato Cervaiole and Arabescato Vagli, among others
- ASTM C503 absorption
- 0.20% by weight maximum
- ASTM C503 soundness groups
- A to D, set by the producer
- Mohs hardness
- About 3 (calcite)
Arabescato is a trade name for white marble with decorative, flowing veining. It covers several varieties, so two pieces sold under the name can look different. In a bathroom it behaves like any marble: low water absorption, vulnerable to acid. Ask for the variety, the soundness group and photos of the block.

What is Arabescato marble?
Arabescato is a name for white marble with ornamental, flowing veins. The word echoes arabesque, a winding decorative pattern, and the exact pattern changes from one variety to the next.
The stone itself is ordinary marble: dense, easily polished and low in water absorption. Where it differs from a plain white is in how much the veining dominates the piece, and how much variation there is from one block to the next.
What are the properties of Arabescato?
| Property | Arabescato |
|---|---|
| Stone family | Marble; metamorphic, recrystallized calcite or dolomite [6] |
| Named varieties | Arabescato Cervaiole and Arabescato Vagli are listed with Calacatta as exotic variations in the Carrara area [1] |
| Density (ASTM C503 minimum) | 162 lb/ft³ calcite class; 175 lb/ft³ dolomite class [2] |
| Water absorption (ASTM C503 maximum) | 0.20% by weight [2] |
| Flexural strength (ASTM C503 minimum) | 1,000 psi [2] |
| Soundness groups | A to D by how many voids and flaws need waxing, filling or reinforcement; marble is classified by its producer [2] |
| Mohs hardness | Calcite is 3 [3] |
| Acid sensitivity | Calcite dissolves in dilute acid, releasing carbon dioxide [3] |
| Finish and sealing | Honed marble is very absorbent and should be sealed; etching shows as lost polish [5] |

Why is Arabescato a family of marbles rather than one stone?
The name describes a style of veining, not a quarry. Wikipedia lists Arabescato Cervaiole and Arabescato Vagli, with Calacatta varieties, as more exotic and expensive Carrara-area variations. Each has its own background and vein character.
For a buyer this changes the question from what Arabescato looks like to which Arabescato is on offer. Photos of the exact block settle it faster than any description.
Does an Arabescato piece come from Italy?
The name tells you about the pattern. The recognized varieties are classically associated with the Carrara district in Tuscany, but a trade name is not an origin certificate, and Pietra Fonte does not say that any piece comes from a given quarry or from Italy.
If provenance matters for your project, ask what we know about the block. We will say what we can document and what we cannot.
What are soundness groups, and why do they matter for a veined piece?
ASTM C503 sorts marble into four soundness groups based on the repairs it needs in fabrication. The classification has nothing to do with merit or value, and the producer assigns it.
| Group | What the standard says |
|---|---|
| A | Sound; no geological flaws, voids, cracks or open seams |
| B | Similar to A, with minor small holes that may need waxing, sticking or filling |
| C | Geological flaws, voids and lines of separation are common and repaired |
| D | More natural faults and maximum variation; more of the same repairs |
Source: ASTM C503, 08a edition, section 5. The standard says only Group A should be used where the stone must bear weight without reinforcement.
A carved basin or tub is a structural object, so the group is worth asking about, especially for a veined stone where lines run through thin walls.
How does Arabescato behave in a bathroom?
Water is tolerated: ASTM C503 allows 0.20% absorption at most, and the minimum density is 162 lb/ft³ for calcite marble. Acid is not. Calcite dissolves in dilute acid, so polished faces dull where toothpaste, citrus, vinegar or acidic cleaners sit.
Busy veining helps here. The pattern distracts from small marks and etch rings, so a honed Arabescato tends to look settled sooner than a plain white. Honed marble is very absorbent and should be sealed, according to Great Floors, and a sealer will not stop etching.
Which pieces suit Arabescato?
- Vessel basin: a compact canvas for the pattern, and the easiest to keep dry.
- Pedestal basin: the veining reads well on a tall carved form.
- Vanity top: show the pattern off, with trays under bottles.
- Freestanding tub: a very large pattern area; plan the floor with the weight guide.
Limits are the same as for any marble: no acidic cleaners, no standing soap residue, no outdoor freezing climates. Drains and supply lines belong with a licensed plumber under local code.
How do you care for Arabescato?
- Seal with a natural stone sealer, honed faces especially.
- Wipe dry after use; squeegee wall surfaces.
- Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner and a soft cloth.
- Keep acids away, and blot spills quickly.
- Let a stone professional handle etching and chips.
The full routine is in the stone bathtub care guide.
How does Arabescato compare with Calacatta and Carrara?
Calacatta is defined by a bright white ground and bold veins. Arabescato's draw is its decorative veining, and the look depends on the variety. Carrara is the quieter relative with soft gray veining.
All three share calcite chemistry, so ASTM figures and etching behavior are identical. See marble for the family overview.
