What is leathered granite?
Last updated November 2026.
Quick answer
- How it is made
- Honed slab brushed with rotating diamond-tipped brushes; about 20 to 40 minutes per slab
- Look and feel
- Matte to satin, low sheen, slightly textured
- Sealing
- About yearly; every six months in a busy kitchen
- Cost premium
- Roughly $10 to $20 per sq ft over the same granite polished
- Bathroom
- Works well; hides fingerprints and water spots
- Pietra Fonte
- No granite pieces; marble can also be leathered
Leathered granite is granite given a matte, slightly textured finish. A honed slab is run under rotating diamond-tipped brushes that follow the stone's crystals, leaving a soft, low-sheen surface you can feel. It hides fingerprints and water spots, needs a penetrating sealer about once a year, and works well in bathrooms.

What is leathered granite?
Leathered granite has a matte, softly textured surface with a low sheen. It sits between polished and honed: less glare than polished and more visual interest than honed, and it keeps most of the stone's color depth. It is not rough like flamed or sandblasted stone.
Granite is mainly quartz and feldspar, so the finish is a texture on a hard stone; it is not a different material. See quartzite vs granite for how it compares.

How is a leathered finish made?
A slab is cut and honed flat, or sometimes partly polished. Then rotating diamond-tipped brushes, cooled with water, travel across the surface. The brushes follow the stone's crystal structure, raising a fine texture. Fabricators typically step from about 60 to 120 grit up to 400 to 800 grit, then rinse and fully dry the slab before sealing.
A full slab takes about 20 to 40 minutes. Harder granites such as Black Pearl take longer and show subtler texture; softer stones with larger crystals show more movement. Machine work is more consistent than hand work, and elaborate edge profiles can leather unevenly.
What does leathered granite look and feel like?
Under your hand it feels like soft undulations, slightly rougher than honed or polished stone. Visually it is matte to satin, with fingerprints and water spots much less visible than on polished granite. Not every granite looks good leathered, and showroom light can mislead, so ask for a sample of the exact stone.
Does leathered granite cost more?
Yes, because of the extra brushing step. One guide puts leathered at roughly $10 to $20 per square foot more than the same granite polished, and about $60 to $120 per square foot installed; another estimates $10 to $30 more. A 45 sq ft kitchen runs about $2,700 to $5,400 installed.
How do you clean and seal leathered granite?
| Task | How | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Daily cleaning | Warm water, a few drops of dish soap; soft brush for crumbs | Daily |
| Degreasing | Stone-safe degreaser, diluted, left a minute or two | Monthly |
| Water test | Drops of water or lemon juice for 10 minutes; darkening means reseal | Every 6 to 12 months |
| Sealing | Penetrating impregnating sealer, not a topical coating (it can flatten texture) | About yearly; every 6 months in a busy kitchen |

Is leathered granite good for a bathroom?
Yes. It hides fingerprints and water spots around sinks and has a soft, tactile feel. The texture catches grease and soap film, so wipe it with a soft brush, and fixtures take a bit more effort to clean. Seal on the same schedule as a kitchen. For a granite or marble decision on a vanity top, read marble vs granite vanity tops.
What are the downsides of leathered granite?
- The texture traps crumbs and grease film, so cleaning takes a soft brush and an occasional degreaser.
- The finish adds cost over polished.
- Not every granite looks good leathered, and showroom lighting may not match your room.
- Elaborate edge profiles can leather unevenly.
- Fixtures and faucet bases take more effort to clean.
Sealing is the part to get right: use a penetrating impregnating sealer, because a topical coating can flatten the texture. Wax-based products build up in the texture and are hard to remove, so avoid them.
Does a leathered finish change how often you seal?
Not the schedule, but the product matters more. Leathered granite is sealed about once a year, or every six months in a busy kitchen, the same as polished granite. A bathroom can usually go on the yearly schedule, and lighter or more porous stones deserve earlier checks.
What changes is the sealer type and the cleanup. Use a penetrating impregnating sealer rather than a topical coating, which can flatten the texture, and wipe off excess so it does not pool in the dimples. Test by placing water or lemon juice on the surface for 10 minutes; if the stone darkens, reseal.
Can marble be leathered?
Yes. Leathered marble uses the same brushing process, giving a matte, textured surface that hides fingerprints. It does not change chemistry: marble still etches from acids, and polished-marble habits such as quick wipe-ups still apply. See honed vs polished marble and marble etching.
Pietra Fonte does not offer granite pieces. We carve marble, travertine and onyx to order; finish is specified with the buyer. See marble basins.
