What clearances does a bathroom need around the toilet, sink and shower?
Last updated November 2026.
Quick answer
- Toilet to side wall or fixture
- 15 in minimum from the centerline
- Between two toilets
- 30 in center to center
- In front of a toilet, sink or bidet
- 21 in clear
- Shower
- 30 × 30 in inside, 900 sq in minimum
- Freestanding tub
- no IRC minimum around it; plan room to clean and step in
Under the International Residential Code, a toilet needs at least 15 inches from its centerline to any side wall or fixture, and 21 inches of clear space in front, as does a sink. A shower must be at least 30 by 30 inches inside. These are minimums: most designers plan more, and your city's adopted code decides.

Which clearances does the code actually set?
In most US homes the International Residential Code (IRC) sets the minimum spacing for plumbing fixtures, in Section P2705.1 and Figure R307.1. It covers the space beside and in front of a toilet, the space in front of a sink or bidet, and the minimum size of a shower. It does not set a clearance around a bathtub. Enter your measurements below to check a plan against those minimums.

Every measurement meets the IRC minimum.
- Meets: Toilet centerline to the nearest obstruction on the left, 16 in (minimum 15 in)
- Meets: Toilet centerline to the nearest obstruction on the right, 18 in (minimum 15 in)
- Meets: Clear space in front of the toilet bowl, 24 in (minimum 21 in)
- Meets: Clear space in front of the sink or vanity, 30 in (minimum 21 in)
- Meets: Shower interior width, 36 in (minimum 30 in)
- Meets: Shower interior depth, 36 in (minimum 30 in)
- Meets: shower floor area, 1,296 sq in (minimum 900 sq in)
Checks the International Residential Code minimums only. Your city may adopt a different edition or amendments; confirm with your contractor or building department.

How much space do you need in front of a toilet?
At least 21 inches of clear floor between the front of the bowl and any wall, fixture or door under the IRC. That is tight; 30 inches feels comfortable, and accessible bathrooms follow the larger ADA clear floor spaces.
How far should a toilet be from the wall or vanity beside it?
15 inches minimum from the toilet's centerline to the nearest side wall, partition, vanity, tub or shower, so a toilet between two obstructions needs at least 30 inches of width. Two toilets side by side need 30 inches between centerlines.
How big does a shower have to be?
At least 30 inches by 30 inches inside the finished walls, and 900 square inches of floor. A 36 × 36 in or 36 × 48 in shower is far more usable, and a wet room around a freestanding tub needs its own drainage and waterproofing plan; see freestanding tub with shower.
How much room does a freestanding tub need?
The IRC sets no clearance around a freestanding tub, so the limits are practical: enough space to clean behind and beside it, to step in safely, and for the filler and drain. Check the tub maker's planning drawing, and keep the toilet and sink clearances above clear of the tub's footprint.
For tub lengths and footprints, see bathtub sizes; for floor loads, the stone bathtub weight calculator.
Code minimum vs comfortable spacing
| Space | IRC minimum | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Toilet centerline to side | 15 in | Measure to the vanity edge, tub rim or shower glass, not just the wall |
| In front of toilet | 21 in | Door swing: the door must not cut into this space |
| In front of sink | 21 in | Drawers and doors on the vanity need room to open |
| Shower | 30 × 30 in | Finished inside size, after tile and stone |
| Freestanding tub | None | Cleaning access, a safe step in, filler reach |
Accessible bathrooms follow the ADA Standards instead, with larger clear floor spaces and a 34 in maximum sink rim height. Your local building department has the final word.
