Will a 54-inch bathtub fit my alcove or tub-shower?
Last updated November 2026.
Quick answer
- Common maker sizes
- 54 × 30 to 30-1/4 in, 14.4–14.5 in soaking depth for acrylic; Kohler's cast iron Seaforth is 54 × 30-1/4 × 14 in
- Water
- 54–55 gal for an acrylic alcove model; 55 gal for a 54 × 30 × 22 in stone oval at 70% fill
- Rough-in rule
- Kohler: dimensions are nominal, measure the actual product
- Hot water
- About 42 gal from the tank for a 55 gal bath
- Solid marble, 54 × 30 × 22 in
- About 940 lb empty, about 1,610 lb filled with a bather, 182 psf
A 54-inch bathtub is the 4.5 ft size found in many older alcoves and tub-shower combinations. Acrylic versions are about 54 × 30 in with 14 in of water. A stone tub of that length is not a drop-in swap: a 54 in opening has no slack, and the tub weighs about 940 lb empty.

What is a 54-inch bathtub, and where does it turn up?
It is a 4.5 ft tub, six inches shorter than the 60 in standard that This Old House lists for most US homes. This Old House notes shorter alcove options around 54 in for spaces where a full 5 ft tub is too long, and many of them double as tub-shower bases. Kohler lists one, the Seaforth 4.5' bath, in enameled cast iron.
Makers' versions are narrow and not very deep. The Seaforth is 54 × 30-1/4 × 14 in with a 30 gallon capacity. Voltaire's acrylic SM-AB562 is 54 × 30 × 22-7/16 in with a 14-1/2 in soaking depth. For stone, the same 54 in length gives a deeper soak because walls are carved rather than molded.

How do I measure for a 54-inch bathtub?
Treat the opening as unknown until you have measured it three ways. Old plaster, tile and framing are rarely true, so the wall-to-wall distance can change between floor and rim height.
- Measure end wall to end wall at floor level, at rim height and at 30 in up. Record all three.
- Take the back wall to the front edge of the floor opening, then add any apron or finished-wall overhang.
- Mark which end the drain is on, looking at the tub from the room.
- Read the maker's sheet. Kohler notes that all dimensions are nominal and to measure the actual product.
- Measure the route in: doors, the turn at the stairs, and the narrowest point. A stone tub is heavy, so see the delivery guide.
Plumbing position follows the model, not a standard, and the drain rough-in guide shows where it lands.
Will a stone tub fit where my old 54-inch tub was?
Not usually at the same length. An old alcove tub has a flange and sits tight against the walls. A freestanding stone tub should stand off the wall by a few inches for cleaning, as Drench recommends 4–6 in for freestanding baths. The table shows what works in a 54 in opening.
| Replacement | Outside length | Fit in a 54 in opening |
|---|---|---|
| Acrylic alcove, 54 × 30 in (Voltaire, Aqua Eden) | 54 in | Yes, with flange to the studs |
| Cast iron alcove, Kohler Seaforth | 54 in | Yes, same size, right drain only |
| Stone oval, 48 × 28 in | 48 in | Yes, about 3 in free at each end |
| Stone oval, 54 × 30 in | 54 in | No gap left; needs a wider space |
| Any 60 in tub | 60 in | No |

If the opening is the only space you have, the 48 in stone oval is the safer choice, and the open gap at each end becomes a waterproofing question for the walls. The sizes guide shows where 48 in sits among the others.
Can a 54-inch tub work as a tub-shower?
An alcove tub works as a shower base because it has a flange, an apron and a flat or sloped floor. A freestanding stone tub does not, since it is not designed to carry a curtain, a wall kit or a door track. If you want both, a separate shower or a freestanding tub with a wet-room layout is the usual answer, which the freestanding tub with shower guide sets out.
If you plan a shower door, check the rim. Kohler's sheet for the Seaforth lists a minimum flat for a door of 2-15/16 in, and the same figure is 2-13/16 in on its 60 in Devonshire.
How many gallons does a 54-inch tub hold?
Between 30 and 55 gallons on maker sheets, and more with deeper water. Kohler's Seaforth lists 30 gallons with 8-5/8 in of water, while the Aqua Eden Jenny, an acrylic 54 × 30 × 21-5/8 in alcove tub, lists 54 to 55 gallons and a 14.4 in soaking depth. Our gallons calculator shows how depth pushes the figure for a 54 × 26 in inside size.
| Water depth | Oval | Rectangular | Hot water for the oval |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14 in | 67 gal | 77 gal | About 52 gal |
| 16 in | 76 gal | 88 gal | About 59 gal |
| 20 in | 95 gal | 109 gal | About 73 gal |

What does a 54-inch stone tub weigh?
About 940 lb empty in marble and 880 lb in travertine, at 54 × 30 × 22 in with 2.5 in walls. Water at 70% of the basin is 55 gallons or 460 lb, and a 200 lb bather brings marble to about 1,610 lb. On a 54 × 30 in footprint that is 182 psf.
The same size in cast iron is 277 lb (Kohler Seaforth), in acrylic 46 to 60 lb. Kohler lists a minimum floor load of 49 psf for the cast iron model. Empty, the stone tub is about 3.4 times the cast iron one. Have a structural engineer check the joists, and read the weight guide for the model behind these numbers.
Is a 54-inch tub too small?
It depends on the bather. This Old House says a 54 in tub may feel compact for taller people but can suit smaller bathrooms and anyone who prefers a seated bath if the depth and width work. If you are unsure, compare it against the 58 and 60 in sizes in the sizes guide.
