What is green onyx, and does it work in a backlit bathroom?
Last updated November 2026.
Quick answer
- Material
- Banded fine-grained calcite (travertine type), not silica onyx
- Look
- Olive to mint green, milky white patches, red to orange-brown oxide markings
- Mohs hardness
- About 3 (calcite), against 6.5–7 for true silica onyx
- Classic locality
- Chagai area of Balochistan, Pakistan, with the same belt reaching Iran and Afghanistan
- Light
- Translucent; sold as backlit panels bonded to glass or acrylic
Green onyx is banded calcite laid down by hot springs, with olive-to-mint bands and white patches. It is translucent, so a thin slab lit from behind glows green. It is soft, about 3 on the Mohs scale, and acids etch it, so it suits feature walls, basins and vanity fronts better than floors.

What is green onyx, and does it work in a backlit bathroom?
Green onyx is a calcium carbonate stone, not the silica gemstone onyx. It is translucent, so a thin slab lit from behind glows, which is why it is sold for feature walls, vanity fronts and basins. It is also soft, so it needs gentle handling.
True onyx is a chalcedony, a fine intergrowth of quartz and moganite, at 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale. Wikipedia describes the banded calcite sold under the same name as much softer, and calcite itself sits at 3. One distributor, Prestige Edition, describes green onyx geologically as a compact banded travertine of very fine-grained calcite.
This page covers the green variety. For hardness, water and heat behavior shared by every color, read the general onyx guide.
What are the properties of Green Onyx?
| Property | Green Onyx |
|---|---|
| Rock type | Banded, very fine-grained calcite; travertine type [2] |
| Mohs hardness | About 3 (calcite); true silica onyx is 6.5–7 [7] |
| Colors | Olive, sage, mint, milky white patches, red to orange-brown oxide markings [2] |
| Colorant (seller claim) | Trace copper and iron [3] |
| Classic locality | South of the Chagai mountains, Balochistan; belt runs into Iran and Afghanistan [2] |
| Finishes listed | Polished, honed, hammered, flamed, chiseled [4] |
| Backlit panel build | Thin stone bonded to glass or acrylic; panels up to 4 × 8 ft [5] |
| Sealing (seller advice) | Impregnating sealer every 6–12 months [3] |
| Bathroom guidance | Acid etches travertine and marble; seal daily-use stone; neutral pH cleaner [6] |

What gives green onyx its color and banding?
Mineral-rich spring water laid the calcite down in layers, which is where the bands come from. Prestige Edition says green onyx also contains milky white patches, translucent green zones and oxide markings from red to orange-brown, formed as circulating groundwater oxidized the stone. It adds that slabs with dark green markings are the most coveted.
Tone runs from olive and sage to pale mint. Dedalo Stone describes the Balochistan material as light green with tone-on-tone veins leaning toward white. In2stone credits trace copper and iron for the green. No geological paper reviewed here confirms the colorants, so read that as a seller's explanation.
Can green onyx be backlit in a bathroom?
Yes. Dedalo calls it well suited to backlighting, and StonePly says controlled lighting brings out its color variation and layered structure, noting that the stone's appearance changes with lighting conditions.
A backlit surface is a built panel, not a slab hung on a wall. StonePly bonds a thin layer of stone to glass or clear acrylic so light passes through and weight drops, in panels up to 4 × 8 ft. Thin sections glow most; thick or heavily oxidized zones stay dark and read as solid. That contrast is the character of the stone, and it is best judged on a lit sample.
Lighting behind a bathroom wall puts electrics near water. Check the design with a licensed electrician and local code. The backlit onyx guide covers light sources and spacing in more detail.
Where in a bathroom does green onyx work, and where does it not?
| Use | Fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Backlit feature wall | Strong | Vertical, little wear, translucency shows |
| Vanity front or side panel | Good | Light contact, away from cleaners and floor water |
| Vessel basin | Good with care | Constant water; wipe dry, avoid acidic cleaners |
| Vanity top | Caution | Toothpaste, cosmetics and cleaners etch or stain a soft surface |
| Shower wall | Caution | Needs sealing and waterproofing behind it; neutral cleaner only |
| Floor | Poor | Soft at Mohs 3 and slippery when polished and wet |
| Freestanding tub | Possible | A statement piece; weight is the planning issue |
Fit ratings are our reading of the cited hardness and care guidance, not a standards rating.
Use Natural Stone's shower guidance says acid etches marble and travertine and that stone in daily-use bathrooms should be sealed. It does not cover onyx, which is softer than either, so take its advice as a minimum. Our weight model uses about 168 lb/ft³ for onyx, the same as marble; see onyx bathtubs and onyx basins.
How does green onyx differ from white, blue and pink onyx?
All four are the same kind of rock, so hardness, etching and fragility match. What changes is the pigment. Green shows its bands and oxide markings strongly, which means more variation to approve between slabs, and it glows in color rather than white.
In2stone describes white onyx as typically the most uniformly translucent, because a lighter composition has fewer opaque inclusions. Blue onyx is sold in far smaller quantities, and pink is another carbonate color. If you want an even glow, choose white; if you want a defined, banded green with dark patches, choose green and check the specific slab.
How do you care for green onyx?
In2stone recommends an impregnating sealer every 6–12 months, warm water with pH-neutral stone soap, blotting spills immediately, and avoiding vinegar, lemon, wine and hot items placed directly on the stone. It also suggests periodic professional polishing.
Use Natural Stone's bathroom advice adds a neutral pH cleaner, squeegeeing walls after showers, and a professional rehone or repolish every two to five years where water and calcium deposits dull the surface. Seal intervals for onyx are not set by any standard, so ask the fabricator what they use.
Where is green onyx classically found?
The best-known green onyx belt lies south of the Chagai mountains in Balochistan, Pakistan. Prestige Edition says volcanic activity in late Miocene and Pleistocene times supplied the heat for springs that deposited the onyx, in a broad band that crosses into Iran and Afghanistan.
Sellers disagree on details. In2stone adds Iranian quarries around Kerman and Kurdistan, and Wikipedia lists banded calcite from Mexico and India among onyx localities. Treat any single locality claim as unverified; this is general geology of the variety only.
