What is coral stone, and is it real coral?
Last updated November 2026.
Quick answer
- Rock type
- Limestone built from ancient coral reef material
- Not living coral
- Quarried fossil reef, formed long before today's reefs
- Porosity
- High; porous, semi-porous and compact types exist
- Classic sources
- Dominican Republic, Florida Keys, East Africa, Bermuda
- Hardness
- Calcite is under Mohs 4
- Acid reaction
- Etches; calcium carbonate
Coral stone is limestone made of fossilized reef material, not living coral. It is quarried from ancient reef deposits, such as those in the Dominican Republic and the Florida Keys, and is usually porous, pale and rough-textured. Indoors it needs sealing and gentle cleaning, and it etches in acid like any limestone.

What is coral stone?
Coral stone is limestone made from ancient coral reef material. The term covers rubbly, fossil-rich blocks that are cut or sawn and used for building, and the geological name coral rag also refers to the rock layers they come from. Most limestone is biological in origin, built from skeletal fragments of coral and other marine life, and the upper Florida Keys are made of coral reef skeletons.
It should not be confused with living reef. Coral stone comes from fossil deposits that are now exposed on land and quarried like any other limestone.
What are the properties of Coral stone?
| Property | Coral stone |
|---|---|
| Rock type | Rubbly limestone composed of ancient coral reef material [1] |
| Building use | Blocks are an important local building material on the East African coast and the southeastern US littoral, including Florida and Bermuda [1] |
| Dominican deposits | Concentrated along the southern coast, with others in the north including Samaná; about six quarries worked, per a trade article [2] |
| Density types | Porous, semi-porous and compact; the porous type is most used [2] |
| Colors | Pink tones from iron oxide, dense yellow varieties, and weaker black types [2] |
| Finishes | Rustic, honed, aged and split; brushed and honed are most common [2] |
| Florida keystone | Coral stone from the Florida Keys, described by one vendor as more porous and rougher than Dominican stone [3] |
| Reef porosity | The Key Largo Limestone is a skeletal coral reef, more permeable than the Miami oolite [4] |
| Calcite hardness | Calcite and aragonite are under Mohs 4; limestone fizzes in dilute acid [5] |

Is coral stone made of real coral?
Yes, as a fossil. The rock is formed from reef skeletons that were buried and cemented into limestone, so it contains coral fragments and sometimes whole coral heads. The Key Largo Limestone in Florida is a skeletal coral reef fossilized in place, with corals, mollusks and bryozoans visible.
The material is sold as blocks, pavers or tile, never as coral itself. Ask the supplier for the quarry name and a test report so you know which deposit you are buying.
Where is coral stone quarried?
Classically in the Caribbean and the American southeast. Spanish settlers used it in New World buildings from the late 1400s and early 1500s, and it remains abundant in the Dominican Republic and Colombia. Dominican deposits run along the south coast, with others in the north including Samaná, Gaspar Hernández and the Cordillera Septentrional, and a trade article counts six quarries in work.
Florida keystone is coral stone from the Keys, used in Coral Gables and Coconut Grove for structural and decorative work. A vendor says Dominican stone is cut with a smoother face, while keystone is more porous and can have jagged pieces. Coral rag blocks are also a local building material on the East African coast and in Bermuda, and the west wing of the Barbados Parliament (1872) is built from local coral rag.
What colors and finishes does coral stone come in?
Trade descriptions give pink tones from iron oxide, yellow and golden varieties that are dense and strong, and black types that are weaker and used for garden paths. Named Dominican grades include Classic Coral (dense and uniform), Colonial Coral (aged, with holes) and Palladium Coral (suited to honed or polished interior floors).
Finishes are rustic, honed, aged and split, with brushed and honed the most common. A natural look is possible without polishing, which suits porous stone, since polish on a soft calcite shows etching quickly.
Is coral stone porous?
Usually, yes. A Dominican trade article sorts the stone into porous, semi-porous and compact types and says the porous type is the most widely used. Limestone as a class ranges from about 0.1% porosity in the densest rock to about 40% in chalk, and reef limestone sits toward the open end.
No single absorption figure applies, so buyers should ask for ASTM C97 or equivalent results on the lot. That is the number to compare across suppliers.
| Type | Trade description |
|---|---|
| Porous | The most widely used type |
| Semi-porous | Between the other two |
| Compact | Classic Coral grade is described as dense and uniform |

Can coral stone be used in a bathroom?
Yes, as tile, wall cladding and surrounds. A trade article lists bathrooms, pool areas and interior decorative elements among its uses, and says it can be shaped and repaired while keeping its appearance. A vendor claims it does not slip when wet and has low heat absorption, but those are marketing claims without test data.
The cautions are the ones for any porous calcite stone. Seal it with a penetrating sealer, use pH-neutral cleaners, and keep vinegar, citrus and bleach away, since dilute acid fizzes on limestone. Shower floors and vanity tops will show water marks and soap sooner than dense stone. Ask a licensed installer about waterproofing and local code.
What is coral stone often compared with?
Pale, pitted limestones: travertine, Jerusalem stone and Indiana limestone. Travertine shows linear pits and banding where coral stone shows fossil voids and a rough, rubbly face. Compared with polished marble such as Carrara, coral stone is rougher and more open, and it etches in the same way.
Does Pietra Fonte make pieces in coral stone?
We don't currently offer coral stone. We carve marble, travertine, onyx and a small range of other stones to order. See the stone library for what we work in, or write to us about a one-off piece through bespoke.
