Is a 72-inch bathtub worth it for tall bathers and two people?
Last updated November 2026.
Quick answer
- Maker examples
- Kohler 72 × 36 in: 90 gal freestanding, 72 gal alcove; 15–15-11/16 in water depth
- Stone, 72 × 34 × 22 in oval
- 88 gal at 70% fill, about 730 lb of water; about 67 in inside length
- Hot water
- About 68 gal from the tank for an 88 gal bath; about 77 gal for 100 gal
- Wall length to reserve
- About 80–84 in for a freestanding 72 in tub, with 4–6 in at each end
- Solid marble
- About 1,290 lb empty, about 2,230 lb filled with a bather, 167 psf (weight model)
A 72-inch bathtub gives tall bathers room to recline and couples room to share, at the cost of 72–135 gallons of water, 55–104 gallons of hot water and a heavy floor load. In solid marble, 72 × 34 × 22 in weighs about 1,290 lb empty and 2,230 lb filled.

Who needs a 72-inch bathtub?
Seventy-two inches is the top of the range. This Old House puts freestanding lengths at 55 to 72 in and the typical US tub at 60 in, so a 72 in tub is a full foot longer than the standard. Two groups buy it: tall bathers who want to extend their legs, and households that want to bathe together.
It also changes the room. A 72 in tub is a fixture that sets the plan of a primary bath, with the vanity and shower arranged around it. If the wall run is short, a 66 or 60 in tub may suit better; the bathtub sizes guide compares the lengths.

How much room does the inside of a 72-inch tub give?
Less than the outside suggests for molded tubs, because the floor of the basin narrows. Kohler lists the Stargaze 72 × 36 in with a bottom basin of 50 × 24-1/2 in and a top of 61 × 27-1/2 in. The Archer 72 × 36 in alcove tub has a bottom of 51-3/8 × 21 in and a top of 64-1/2 × 30-1/2 in. A carved stone tub with straight inner walls gives more usable length.
| Tub | Outside | Inside, bottom | Inside, top | Water depth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kohler Stargaze, freestanding acrylic | 72 × 36 in | 50 × 24-1/2 in | 61 × 27-1/2 in | 15-11/16 in |
| Kohler Archer, alcove acrylic | 72 × 36 in | 51-3/8 × 21 in | 64-1/2 × 30-1/2 in | 15 in |
| Stone oval, our model | 72 × 34 in | About 67 × 29 in | About 67 × 29 in | About 13 in at 70% fill |
Sources: Kohler spec sheets K-6367 and K-1125. Stone inside size is outside less 2.5 in walls; fill depth is 70% of a basin 19 in deep. Both are our arithmetic.
Ask any maker for the inside floor length. That number, not the outside, decides whether a tall bather reclines.
Can two people use a 72-inch bathtub?
It depends on the inside width and the shape, so read the drawing. At 34 to 36 in wide, a 72 in tub can seat two adults at opposite ends, facing each other, with little room to spread out. Kohler's Stargaze has integral lumbar support on both ends, a feature that suits that arrangement.
Check the hot water before you plan a shared bath, using the next two sections. If width is the priority, say so in your specification; made-to-order pieces are quoted to the buyer's size, and the bespoke page is the place to start.
How many gallons does a 72-inch tub hold?
Between 72 and 90 gallons on Kohler's 72 × 36 in sheets, and 88 gallons for our 72 × 34 × 22 in stone oval at 70% fill. The shape of the basin makes the difference: an acrylic tub tapers, while a carved oval is full-width. For deeper water, the calculator gives the totals below for a 66 × 30 in inside size, the closest row to a 72 in carved tub.
| Water depth | Oval, gal | Rectangular, gal | Water weight, oval | Hot water, oval |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14 in | 94 | 108 | About 784 lb | About 72 gal |
| 16 in | 108 | 123 | About 901 lb | About 83 gal |
| 20 in | 135 | 154 | About 1,126 lb | About 104 gal |

What water heater does a 72-inch tub need?
A big one. Using our hot-water model, a 40 gallon bath needs 31 gallons from the tank and a 100 gallon bath needs 77. An 88 gallon fill therefore needs about 68. Kohler's spec sheets ask for a hot water supply of 70% of the bath's capacity or more, and Jaspector's sizing guide lists 50–80 gallons of hot water for a soaking tub.
Tank size does not tell the story. Jaspector gives a first-hour rating of 78 gallons for a 50-gallon gas unit and 56 for a 50-gallon electric one. The choices are a larger or high-recovery heater, a second tank, or a staged fill. A licensed plumber can size it. Filling a tub of this size also takes time, so ask about the flow rate of the filler you plan to use.
Will my floor hold a 72-inch stone tub?
Plan for a structural review. Our weight model gives 1,290 lb empty for a marble oval of 72 × 34 × 22 in and 1,200 lb for travertine. With 730 lb of water and a 200 lb bather, marble reaches about 2,230 lb, which is 167 psf over the footprint. IRC Table R301.5 sets 40 psf for non-sleeping rooms and 30 psf for bedrooms.
Kohler's acrylic 72 in tubs list minimum floor loads of 40 psf (Archer) and 48.8 psf (Stargaze). Weights there are 80 and 152 lb. A longer tub spreads its load over more floor, and 167 psf is the lowest in our length range, but the total is the largest. A joist run under the whole footprint, a slab, or added framing may be needed. The weight guide explains the model, and the delivery guide covers getting a piece this size through the house.
How much room does a 72-inch freestanding tub need?
Add the tub, a gap at each end and the clear floor in front. Drench's minimum wall gap of 4–6 in gives 80 to 84 in for the long wall and, for a 34 in wide tub, 42 to 46 in across. The IRC requires 21 in of clear floor in front of a tub. The clearances guide lays out the rest, and the marble bathtub cost guide shows how price follows size.
