Calacatta Viola is a white marble with violet, burgundy and wine-red veins, associated with the Apuan Alps of Tuscany. Like all calcite marble it etches in acids and needs sealing, so it suits vanity tops and walls better than a heavily used kitchen. Honed faces keep the color deep and matte.

What is Calacatta Viola marble, and is it practical for a bathroom vanity?
Calacatta Viola is white marble whose veins run violet, burgundy and wine-red rather than gray or gold. It is associated with the Apuan Alps of Tuscany. It is a showpiece stone, and practical in a bathroom as long as you accept that it is a calcite marble that etches.
A Marble Systems post sums up the trade-off: it gives an atmosphere no other material can, and it demands the care you would give anything irreplaceable.

Why does one slab of Calacatta Viola look so different from the next?
Marble Systems notes that each slab has its own direction, weight and flow of veining, and that variation between pieces is significant. That is why it advises selecting bookmatched slabs in person rather than from photos.
Polished amplifies the drama and makes the veins look three-dimensional. Honed keeps the mood grounded and matte, and the same source says the burgundy then looks almost like velvet.
Does Calacatta Viola etch and stain?
Yes. Marble Systems says it is a calcite stone and will etch when acids like lemon juice, wine or vinegar sit on it. A penetrating sealer before and after installation, renewed annually, slows staining but does not stop etching.
Wipe toothpaste, mouthwash and cleaning sprays promptly. A honed face makes etch marks less visible than polish does, and Marble Systems says most of its residential projects choose honed.
Can Calacatta Viola go in a shower?
Country Floors' application guide rates it suitable for shower walls and bathroom walls, but lists shower floors and bathroom floors as mosaics only. Large polished pieces on a wet floor are slippery, so use small-format mosaic tile there.
| Bathroom use | Country Floors rating |
|---|---|
| Bathroom vanity | Suitable |
| Bathroom wall | Suitable |
| Shower wall | Suitable |
| Bathroom floor | Mosaics only |
| Shower floor | Mosaics only |
| Exterior floor or wall | Warm climates; avoid frost areas |

Is a Calacatta Viola surface always real marble?
No. Italgraniti sells a marble-effect porcelain slab named Calacatta Viola, 1.2 cm thick, and describes it as inspired by Breccia Medicea, an Italian marble quarried at Seravezza and Carrara. If you are buying natural stone, ask for the rock type and a sample of the actual slab.
A porcelain slab is a different material from solid marble, so it will not behave, wear or be worked like a stone vanity or tub.
What rooms and formats does Calacatta Viola suit?
Marble Systems describes the stone's palette as sitting in the same register as aged oak, smoked glass and unlacquered brass, and suggests powder rooms, wine rooms and stair risers alongside kitchens. For bathrooms it lists 12 x 24 in tiles, fluted accent tile and mosaics, each reading differently: the large format as one continuous statement, the mosaics as fragments with a more intimate rhythm.
Because the veining is strong, one feature surface, such as a vanity top or a single wall, usually does more than covering every plane. A polished powder room reflects light, while a honed master bath stays quiet.
Where is Calacatta Viola classically quarried?
Sellers place it in the Apuan Alps of Tuscany. Italgraniti's page mentions Seravezza and Carrara as the home of the marble that inspired it. That is general geology about the variety; quarry and block details vary by supplier, and sellers do not agree on a single locality.
