Is Blue Pearl granite really granite, and why does it flash blue?
Last updated November 2026.
Quick answer
- Rock type
- Larvikite, a monzonite; not true granite
- Optical effect
- Silver-blue sheen (labradorescence)
- Age
- Permian, about 292–298 million years
- Origin as listed (MSI)
- Norway
- Feldspar hardness
- Mohs 6
Not strictly. Blue Pearl is larvikite, a variety of monzonite from southern Norway, sold under the granite label. Its feldspar crystals show a silver-blue sheen called labradorescence that shifts as you move. That optical effect, more than the base color, is what you are buying.

Is Blue Pearl granite really granite?
Wikipedia describes larvikite as an igneous rock, a variety of monzonite, known for thumbnail-sized feldspar crystals, and says its trade label Blue Pearl granite is not technically accurate. It is built mainly from plagioclase and alkali feldspar with amphibole, often with olivine and apatite, and is usually rich in titanium.
MSI sells it as granite from Norway. Monzonite is among the rocks that Wikipedia's granite article classes outside true granite, which needs 20–60% quartz. For a vanity top, that rock-name argument changes little; the sheen is what you should be testing.
What are the properties of Blue Pearl granite?
| Property | Blue Pearl granite |
|---|---|

| Composition | Mainly plagioclase, alkali feldspar and amphibole, often olivine and apatite [1] |
| Optical effect | Silver-blue sheen from alternating feldspar layers [1] |
| Age and place | Larvik Batholith, southern Norway; Permian, about 292–298 million years [1] |
| Other source | Killala Lake complex near Thunder Bay, Ontario [1] |
| Heritage status | IUGS Global Heritage Stone Resource [1] |
| Color (MSI) | Blue primary, dark gray accent; blue, gray and beige shades [2] |
| Finish and sizes (MSI) | Polished; 3 cm slabs and 12 × 12 tile; variation medium [2] |
| Feldspar hardness | Orthoclase 6 on the Mohs scale [4] |

Why does Blue Pearl flash blue as you walk past?
Labradorescence comes from alternating layers inside the feldspar crystals. Light reflects from those layers and returns as silver-blue, so the color flashes at certain angles and fades at others. A polished face shows it most.
This is why a small tile sample can mislead. Look at a full slab under the light you will actually have, from the places people will stand, such as the doorway and the mirror.
Where is Blue Pearl quarried?
The main source is the Larvik Batholith in southern Norway, a Permian intrusion about 292–298 million years old linked to the Oslo Rift. The stone is named for the town of Larvik, where many quarries operate. Wikipedia also records larvikite at the Killala Lake complex near Thunder Bay, Ontario. The International Union of Geological Sciences has designated larvikite a Global Heritage Stone Resource. This is general geology about the variety.
How does Blue Pearl compare with ordinary granite?
| Trait | Blue Pearl (larvikite) | Typical granite |
|---|---|---|
| Rock family | Monzonite | Granite: 20–60% quartz |
| Key minerals | Plagioclase, alkali feldspar, amphibole | Quartz, alkali feldspar, mica |
| Visual hook | Silver-blue sheen that moves | Speckle or veining |
| Hardness driver | Feldspar, Mohs 6 | Quartz 7 and feldspar 6 |

Is Blue Pearl suited to vanity tops, shower walls and floors?
MSI lists it for countertops, bathroom vanity walls, shower walls and flooring, residential and commercial, indoors and out, and calls it an exceptional option for exterior cladding. Polished is the only finish listed, so floors need care when wet. MSI's page does not state sealing needs, so ask the fabricator. Larvikite is a widely used facade stone, according to Wikipedia, which supports wall use.
How does the sheen read on a shower wall versus a floor?
On a vertical wall the blue flash is seen at eye level from fixed positions, such as the shower door and the vanity mirror, so you can test it before you buy. On a floor you see the surface from above at changing angles, and wet polished stone is slippery. MSI lists Blue Pearl for shower walls, vanity walls and flooring in a polished finish only, and also sells 12 × 12 tile at 0.37 inch thick.
Check slip resistance and waterproofing for floors with a licensed installer and local code.
Will every Blue Pearl lot look the same?
MSI rates variation medium. Wikipedia says larvikite carries thumbnail-sized feldspar crystals, so expect differences in how much blue shows from slab to slab. MSI lists Norway, while larvikite is also found in Ontario, so ask which source your slab comes from. We did not find a published comparison of the two sources.
Ask for a photo of the full slab taken from two angles, and a tile sample to carry into your bathroom.
