Is Patagonia a quartzite or a granite, and can you backlight it?
Last updated November 2026.
Quick answer
- Look
- Cream, beige, black, grey and brown with gold veins and translucent quartz
- Sold as
- 'Patagonia Granite' by many sellers, quartzite by others
- Grain
- Very coarse, with large angular white-beige minerals
- Backlighting
- Light passes through the quartz areas
- Finish seen
- Polished
Technically it is sold as a quartzite, though one supplier's own description reads like a coarse-grained granite, which is why you will see both names. It is a hard, bold stone with translucent quartz that can be backlit. In a bathroom it suits a feature vanity top or wall, not a calm scheme.

Is Patagonia a quartzite or a granite, and can you backlight it?
Both names are used. Brachot, a stone supplier, files Patagonia under quartzite and says it is often sold as 'Patagonia Granite' even though it is technically quartzite. Yet the supplier describes the stone as very coarse-grained, with large angular white-beige minerals and darker mineral concentrations, a texture closer to granite.
That tension is useful: it tells you to rely on the slab's behavior rather than the label. The same supplier describes it as hard, dense and resistant to heat, scratches and stains.
What are the properties of Patagonia quartzite?
| Property | Patagonia quartzite |
|---|---|
| Color | Cream, beige, black, grey and brown with golden veining [1] |
| Texture | Very coarse-grained, with large angular white-beige minerals [1] |
| Translucency | Quartz areas transmit light, enabling a partial glow [1] |
| Trade label | Often sold as Patagonia Granite [1] |
| Finish supplied | Polished, brilliant and sometimes sparkling [1] |
| Related names | Cristallo Patagonia, Patagonia Super Crystal [2] |
| Granite hardness | Mohs 6–7 [3] |
| Quartzite hardness | Mohs 7, more than 90% quartz [3] |

Why is Patagonia sold as granite?
Sellers use the familiar word because buyers trust granite. Brachot says it supplies Patagonia under its correct designation as quartzite, with documentation. Brachot's own description, however, calls it very coarse-grained with large angular minerals, a texture that resembles granite, so ask for the paperwork.
| Property | Granite | Quartzite |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Igneous rock | Metamorphosed quartz sandstone |
| Mohs | 6–7 | 7 |
| Quartz content | Mixed minerals | More than 90% quartz when true |
| Acid reaction | None expected | None expected |
Hardness and quartz figures from Dynamic Stone Tools; origin from Wikipedia. Both rocks resist household acids, so an acid test does not separate them.
How do you backlight Patagonia?
Pick a slab with large translucent quartz areas, use a thin cut, and mock up the lighting behind it before cutting. One supplier says results depend on thickness, backing, diffuser, joints and room light. A licensed electrician should handle wiring and wet-room code.
Not every part of the slab glows. Brachot and another supplier both note that dark zones stay opaque, which creates the contrast that makes the pattern read. Plan seams so a joint does not cross a bright crystal area.
Is Patagonia too busy for a small bathroom?
It can be. The pattern is high contrast, so one Patagonia vanity top against plain walls and quiet fixtures works better than stone on every surface. Choose the slab by eye, as veins, black zones and clear areas vary widely.
Polished is the finish seen at the supplier cited. It brings out colors and sparkle, so it will look busier than a honed face would.
What care does a Patagonia vanity top need?
Brachot says it keeps its beauty and structure over the long term with proper sealing. Clean with a pH-neutral product and wipe up oils and dyes. Because the surface is a mix of minerals, a sealer test on an offcut shows whether dark zones absorb differently from pale ones.
How is this stone different from Cristallo Patagonia?
FOR U STONE describes Cristallo Patagonia as grey-white and crystalline with translucent zones and gold and charcoal movement, also sold as Patagonia Super Crystal. Brachot's Patagonia reads darker and more mixed, with black and brown. The names overlap, so compare photographs of both before choosing.
Where do bold quartzites like this form?
Quartzite is metamorphic: quartz-rich sandstone buried deep and recrystallized by heat and pressure during mountain building, which erases the original sandstone texture. Wikipedia notes that quartzite is mined in Brazil for kitchen countertops. Brachot calls every Patagonia slab a one-off, so a large-format slab is best chosen in person rather than from a catalog photo.
How do you test a Patagonia slab before buying?
Because the label is disputed, test the slab itself. Dynamic Stone Tools advises applying lemon juice or diluted acid to a hidden edge: true quartzite shows no reaction, while carbonate stone fizzes or dulls. It also suggests a steel knife blade, which will not mark Mohs 7 stone, and a mineralogy report showing more than 90% quartz.
Granite and quartzite both pass the acid test, so the acid test confirms only that the slab is not marble. Ask the seller for documentation that names the rock, and inspect the slab for the translucent quartz areas that make backlighting possible.
