Is Black Pearl granite really a syenite, and does the resin filler matter?
Last updated November 2026.
Quick answer
- Look
- Near-black with silver, gold, brown and green speckles
- Rock type
- Syenite per one supplier; sold as granite
- Quarry area
- Gurajapally, Andhra Pradesh
- Finishes
- Polished, honed, leathered, brushed, flamed and more
- Sealing
- Test a sample; over-sealing leaves film
Likely, though sellers disagree. International Granite calls Black Pearl a medium to coarse-grained syenite with a touch of green, which European rules would name syenite, not granite. Syenite is granite-like rock with little quartz. It is dense, speckled and available in many finishes.

Is Black Pearl granite really a syenite?
Wikipedia's granite entry says true granite holds roughly 20–60% quartz, and that rocks outside that range are classed as syenite, monzonite, granodiorite or tonalite. International Granite places Black Pearl in the syenite group: medium to coarse grained, Precambrian, with a touch of green, and nameable as granite internationally but not under the European Standard.
The trade name is the one that matters on a quote. The rock name matters if you need to meet a specification.

Is the resin filler in Black Pearl a problem?
Resin filling is routine across polished stone. International Granite says a clear epoxy filler may be used during polishing to fill micro fissures and pitting, and that it does not affect integrity but gives an even smoother face. It still deserves a question to your fabricator, so you know what heat and solvent limits to expect. We found no test data on that point.
What makes Black Pearl different from other black granites?
Black Pearl carries visible mineral speckle, where Absolute Black is a flat, uniform black. MSI lists speckles of blacks, golds, silvers, browns, greens and shades of gray. International Granite says it looks best polished but is also offered honed, leather or satin, river-washed, flamed, brushed and sandblasted.
| Finish | Bathroom role |
|---|---|
| Polished | Vanity tops; slippery on floors when wet |
| Honed / leather | Floors and shower floors, where grip is wanted |
| Flamed / sandblast | Textured, mostly exterior or wet-area paving |
Finishes offered per International Granite and MSI; roles are general guidance, not a slip rating.
Should Black Pearl be sealed?
Test a small sample first. International Granite says a sealer can be used but excessive attempts could create a residue film build-up. Water-test the stone rather than seal on a schedule.
Is Black Pearl suited to a vanity, shower wall or floor?
MSI lists countertops, bathroom vanity walls and flooring, with the shower wall field unclear. Vanity tops are an easy match. The brushed finish MSI also offers is the one to ask about for floors. Wet-area structure and waterproofing belong with a licensed installer and local code.
What sizes and formats does Black Pearl come in?
International Granite lists 2 cm and 3 cm slabs and standard prefabricated countertops of 94–126 inches long by 24–48 inches deep, and tiles in 12 × 12, 24 × 12, 15 3/4 × 15 3/4 and 18 × 18 inch sizes in 3/8 to 1/2 inch thicknesses. MSI sells 3 cm slabs in several finish variants, including brushed and honed, brushed and polished, iced brushed and classic, plus prefabricated tops of 108 × 42 and 112 × 26 inches, listed in 2 cm.
A standard bathroom vanity top fits inside those prefabricated sizes, so a slab-cut custom top is mostly about the sink position and the edge.
How do you spot a resin-filled or pitted slab?
International Granite says a clear filler may be used and does not affect integrity. Filler is not always visible, so ask the supplier directly. Then look at the polished face at a low angle for pitting in the area where the sink will be cut. This is a practical inspection tip, not a published standard.
